David Crawford - Hook, Line and Scammer

An interview with the author
In a recent interview, we spoke with David Crawford, a respected individual within the DevOps space.
David has an extensive background in leading, building, scaling and inspiring world class product engineering teams for leading brands such as Camelot, Sky and BT. He made his career in technology, but likes to not be boring and so is always on the lookout to get involved with anything else in his spare time.
After hobbies, including wood turning and bee keeping, he decided it was time for that one book everyone has inside them to come out—and so it did…
We caught up with David to discuss his new publication - Hook, Line and Scammer.
1. What inspired you to write the book; Hook, Line and Scammer?
I had always believed that everyone has one book inside them and I had three months off work so I decided to test that theory.
2. Can you tell me what the book is about?
Here is the published synopsis...Having been dealt a bad hand as she enters the autumn of her life, Elizabeth suddenly finds a spark with Joseph through the power of the internet, but is everyone who they say they are? Thousands of miles away, Eb is going the other way – although he has done well at school, the pressure of being the man of the house at a young age and a series of misfortunes place him in a compromising position with a local criminal gang. Unwittingly and unknowingly joined together through DCI Jane Porter’s ambitious police crackdown on Cybercrime, Eb and Elizabeth find they have a common interest in rescuing each other.
A variety of interesting characters in this Venn-diagram of relationships; crime; and justice, bring joy, pain, murder, friendship, identity fraud, family and love together, but when you are not sure who is holding the rod, anyone can get hooked!
3. Did your real life experience as a CTO have any influence on the book?
Definitely. The corporate world of cyber crime is complex and a little boring, so I wanted to use a novel and simpler concept (cat fishing) to open up that world to a wider audience.
4. What should the reader expect from reading the book?
It is a light read and easy to understand the cyber part of it (no need to be a techy!). I would say it’s a beach read.
5. Where can I buy?
At all good bookstores, but also online at Amazon- Hook, Line and Scammer: A Story about Relationships, Cybercrime, and Justice.
