This is not your classic SRE role.
I’m working with a high scale technology organisation looking for a Site Reliability Engineer to join a growing engineering team. This is not your traditional infrastructure heavy SRE role; around sixty percent of your time would be spent on the hands on software engineering side of things, building internal products, tooling and services that improve the reliability and performance of large scale systems.
You’ll be working primarily with Python or Go, developing backend services, automation and observability tooling, while also getting involved in live production troubleshooting and incident response. You’ll work closely with software engineering and operations teams to understand issues, improve resilience and build better ways of monitoring and operating systems at scale.
There’s a strong focus on observability, with technologies including Prometheus, Grafana, New Relic and Splunk, alongside exposure to cloud infrastructure and automation. Experience with SRE principles, SLIs and SLOs is useful, but strong software engineering fundamentals are the priority.
The role gives you the opportunity to have genuine ownership over the systems you work on, rather than simply monitoring them from the outside. You’ll be involved in identifying problems, writing the software and tooling to solve them, and seeing those changes through into production. It’s a role that sits between software engineering and reliability, making it a strong fit for developers who enjoy solving complex operational problems as much as they enjoy writing code.
The scale of the environment is a major part of the opportunity, supporting around fifty million customers, almost one million concurrent connections and systems processing more than five hundred thousand database transactions per second, rising to over a million at peak times. This role sits in the background of massive enterprise systems used by millions worldwide, meaning there is a large direct impact from the work you do.
