Has anyone actually ever given you a good description of what SRE is?
Recently I've spoken dozens of companies implementing a new SRE function, or building on an existing team. Half have just rebranded an ops team (because Ops ain't cool), some don't want to call the additional silo they have created 'DevOps' (because apparently that's the wrong thing to do) so they're calling it or renaming it SRE, and the rest actually don't really know how to describe what they're doing. And if you can't describe it simply, you don't know what it is (because Google do it, isn't the right answer).
That was until this week, when we met a company who actually white boarded their vision and understanding of Site Reliability Engineering within their business.
They talked about production infrastructure optimisation, automation and focusing on the deployment process rather than the build. We discussed Kubernetes, Observability with Prometheus, API Gateways. They know their SLO's from their SLI's and most importantly, they spoke like they knew what the hell they were on about. Not just about SRE, but on the whole Engineering process.
Its a company with $billion dollar unicorn status. A company who boast ex Googlers, Facebookers etc on their exec team and where your stock options will be worth genuinely a life changing amount of money.
It's an opportunity for someone to continue to share strategy as well as utilizing your hands on ability. You can use your expertise with AWS, Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes. You get to be instrumental in the process procedure and strategic direction. We're looking for people who truly understand DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering and want to work with like minded individuals. A deep understand of Distributed Systems and modern infra Architecture along with the ability to use code to solve complex issues, where necessary.
It's also an opportunity to move towards the future of engineering, with a company who really really know what they're doing. Great internal tech culture, working with awesome people on interesting tech challenges.
